Ganesh: A Modern Twist to Traditional Snack Retail Shop

Transforming Tradition into Contemporary Design

The inspiration for Ganesh came from the desire to highlight the products in a way that resembles how a performer is highlighted on stage. The design team achieved this by using a dark background and focused lighting throughout the space. The materials used, such as dark grey and bronze-golden shades, create a subtle yet distinct palette. Different lighting typologies were employed to achieve the desired effect, ensuring that all the products are displayed in focus and expressing the essence of the brand.

The layout of the retail store follows a minimalist design language, generating a strong sense of order and conveying a feeling of permanence and purity. The clean and contemporary finishes and details provide ample storage space, maximizing the interior space. The circulation within the store is kept simple, allowing customers to move easily between core areas.

One of the design challenges was to incorporate natural light without exposing the products to harsh sunlight. The solution was to use full-height clear glass for the storefront, allowing maximum natural light while maintaining visual connectivity between the interior and exterior. The landscape design further reduces the harshness of the sun and enhances the visual connection between inside and outside.

The Ganesh retail shop is located on a busy urban street in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The project started in September 2017 and was completed in March 2018. The rectangular space measures 14m x 8m with a height of 3.8m. The design team carefully selected materials and lighting fixtures to enhance the overall experience of the space. The use of floor-mounted profile LEDs, decorative fixtures with neon lights, and LED strips creates a distinct atmosphere that focuses attention on the display.

Ganesh has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

Amruta Thakkar, the architect and designer behind Ganesh, has created a space that breaks the stereotypes of typical Indian snack stores. With its modern aesthetic, thoughtful layout, and attention to detail, Ganesh offers customers a unique and engaging shopping experience.
